I was riding down my street today to drop off muffins at my friend Lizzie’s while trying to think what subject I should write about and that's when I realized that maybe my street was a good idea. I know a bit about this street having lived here for 21 years.
It was 9:45am and I had 3 hot muffins to deliver to 2 different homes. Here is how it unfolded:
I hopped on my ebike and 3 doors down I passed Ryan’s house. He moved in about 5 years ago and has been slowly turning his place into a zen garden. Here are a couple of photos of it. He works on his garden at the end of the day and we often pass him on our way to the beach. He works slowly and very thoughtfully.
The next house I stopped at is about 150m away and there is a lovely cart outside where they sell seedlings every spring. I don’t know their names, but I have a picture in my mind of what the people in the house might look like. This is where we buy most of what goes into our garden, all for $2 a container. Now that I have written about them I am going to go back and find out who is growing my seeds for me.
Next door to this seedling cart is a house where they were giving away flowers for free. This is just a lovely way to perk up your kitchen and no, I did not take the bucket.
I cycled another 100m and came across this garden that has spilled out of the yard and is now on town land. This is what we call ‘complaint driven land’ as you can usually plant things on it until someone complains to the town. Look what a beautiful splash of colour to come across on the side of the road.
And finally 2 doors down is Lizzie’s house where I stopped to deliver back her muffin pan and a sample of what I made. In case any of you remember my cake episode from last year, Lizzie is the friend who makes the best white cakes ever.
OK, now I want to add one other thing to my bike ride, it is a little illegal as it is not ON my road. I work about a 3 minute bike ride from my road. I am on the gov’t wharf and on the wharf is a bench where boaters put things that they no longer want. Just look at what I found on the bench today! It was all packaged up in a brand new zip lock and it is exactly what I had been telling Lizzie that I needed. My mixer does not have different speeds, just go and stop. This one has a lot of speeds and it has many attachments. I am very excited to try it. I am hoping my cakes might turn out a bit like my neighbour's with this new appliance. And for those of you who are worried, I did clean it. I went over it with a toothbrush and got out all the little bits stuck in the grooves. If I die in the next few days though, you will all know that it came from something scary stuck to the new beaters.
